Speaker 1:

Hi everybody, welcome back to another story time, when girls talk books.

Speaker 2:

I'm Kylie.

Speaker 1:

I'm Susie.

Speaker 2:

And today we're gonna cover Make a Scene by Mimi and Grace. I really like this. This has been on my shelf for so long because I saw this, probably on Instagram, and I was in love with the covers, so I have this one and I have her other one because I just think that they're so cute. So we'll start with star rating.

Speaker 1:

I will give this a 4 out of 5.

Speaker 2:

I thought for sure you were going to be a 5. You're a romance girl. I wish it was. I know I'm your romance girl.

Speaker 1:

I wish it was. I know I'm going to sound. I wish it was longer. I wish there was a little bit more to the story and I think it would have been a five and I wanted some more of that grandma she was.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I love her grandma. Oh, my God so.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, four out of five for sure. I loved reading this book. I loved the author, loved the way the story went. Oh my god, it was good.

Speaker 2:

I rated it a three and a half. There were a lot of things that I really liked about it, so it's not like a bad three and a half. It's definitely like on the upper end of it.

Speaker 1:

Dare we say 3.8?.

Speaker 2:

Well, I would say again I kind of get what you're saying. I wish it was a little bit longer. I wish it was a little bit longer, I wish there was a little bit more to it, but it was very well written. The smut is fantastic.

Speaker 1:

The spice level.

Speaker 2:

Perfection. It's fantastic. I love Duncan. Yes.

Speaker 1:

So well, I love him too.

Speaker 2:

I'm like he's a king.

Speaker 1:

He was the perfect character. I want this to be a movie so bad.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it would be like the cutest rom-com yes, character. I want this to be a movie so bad. Yeah, it would be like the cutest rom-com, yes, yeah, so it's definitely a high three and a half, but it takes a lot Like a four is like for me, it's kind of almost like a five. So it takes a lot to kind of get to a four or a five for me, completely fair, but I really really liked it. Love the characters, love how it was written. Yes, it's funny, it was cute. I liked it. I liked it a lot actually. So maybe it's a four, yes no, I'll say one by three.

Speaker 1:

Okay, three, three point eight.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I like that yeah, okay, so we'll just get right into it as you do in the book you're just kind of thrown in the middle of it right in the middle yeah hi, so welcome to this cute story where her cousin is marrying her ex like dang, can you? Imagine. I don't remember how that comes about. How did the, the cousin and him get together?

Speaker 1:

a month after they broke up. Yeah, no literally swooped right in and just got together. Yeah, diabolical yeah.

Speaker 2:

So we have Retta, who is our main character, and she is at a party with her family and it starts out of like we're engaged and it's her cousin and her ex-boyfriend, chris, who's just, you know, crypto boy.

Speaker 1:

Chris.

Speaker 2:

She's shocked and she's embarrassed almost almost but like she doesn't want to leave the party because she's like you're not going to get the better of me, essentially that's right, which is where this whole story, that's her mindset for the whole thing of like I need to show these people that like I'm over it type of thing, even though I don't really think like how do you ever get over that? Yeah, um, but so that's where we start.

Speaker 2:

And then she owns a bakery yum which she just opened and it does pretty well. But they have a park, a certain amount of parking spots in the back and they're going tit for tat with the new boxing gym next door, next door and she's getting. She's writing on post-it notes like all these parking wars get serious.

Speaker 1:

As someone who just moved out of an apartment and it's like I thought the parking would get better now I'm in a neighborhood where the parking is bad too.

Speaker 2:

It's just like oh my god, I uh have parking wars well, not even really parking rules, but, like at work, I park in the same spot every single day. That's my spot. Every single day. I park in the same spot for how many years now, like I've been there for, like seven years a lot.

Speaker 2:

I still know where you park you know where I park every day and I never took your spot and then you always have new people who come in and they steal your parking spot. Oh man, it makes me so angry. So parking spots are a thing that's mine. Get out of here, or like, even if justin took my parking spot in the driveway, excuse you immediately. No, get out the way. That's my spot.

Speaker 1:

Yep, anyway, sorry so you don't have to be sorry and you don't have to explain yourself.

Speaker 2:

That is your parking spot so there's the parking spot, wars, and then her employees are like, asking her about it, she's like we'll get it sorted?

Speaker 1:

When are you going to do something about it? She's like, I don't like confrontation.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, she's like we'll do something about it. And then she also at some point takes over like a basket of like baked goods to like welcome them, trying to butter them up. She's really trying to be nice, but at the same time she's like these are you're new here? These are which they're unofficial parking spots.

Speaker 1:

They're not actually there Even worse.

Speaker 2:

It's kind of a first come, first serve basis, but they tend to have a grasp on them.

Speaker 1:

And, like human decency, give someone a break every once in a while.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, oh great. So Retta has to go to the engagement party and the wedding and all these events for the thing. So she's like I need a date. As all the love stories start, she needs a date to a wedding. Yep, all fake dating tropes.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's always, you know, absolute perfection, sweet driven woman that gets screwed over but couldn't possibly find anyone to go anywhere with, because I guess all these modern day books and movies that start there's never any such thing as a dating app.

Speaker 2:

No.

Speaker 1:

No way to find someone real quick.

Speaker 2:

Well, no, she is on dating apps. Oh, that's true, because she's like starting to go on a lot of dates.

Speaker 1:

That's true.

Speaker 2:

And the first one is a blind date and her friend Kim sets her up on it.

Speaker 1:

This was that in the coffee shop, so relatable though so good. Like ugh, I could feel the embarrassment in a like yeah.

Speaker 2:

I thought that's one of the things with Retta is, I felt like she was so real, like the awkwardness, the like timidness almost, of her, yeah was like really good, yeah, I felt like she was hilarious. And so, anyway, kim sets her up on a blind date. She goes to the coffee shop and it's like if you see them reading this magazine or newspaper, like that's who they are. So she gets a coffee, she goes and she sits down and she's like oh hi, I'm meta. And he's like staring at her, like okay, okay, congrats, like uh, and she's like I'm your date. And he's like oh huh, like he's just super confused, excuse me, yeah, and and then she's like what?

Speaker 1:

And he's like I'm not your date, like I don't know who you are, who?

Speaker 2:

are you? Yeah, I'm not your date. And she like looks over and there's this respectfully kind of nerdy guy and he's like I think that's your date over there, and she's like no, and she's like okay, and she slides on out and then goes and sits with her actual date, which they do end up having a good time, but you know, in her mind she's like dang, he was cute.

Speaker 1:

It's like when the waiter walks by with the fajitas and you're like I really should have ordered those, as they're sizzling by, and then they bring you your mediocre enchilada and you're like ordered those as they're sizzling by, and then they bring you your mediocre enchilada and you're like yeah, anyway, sorry to mess, all about food, suzy needs a snack.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm just kidding, um. But yes, she's kind of like hmm, he was interesting, um, and they get along in that little like moment that they have together. Like there's definitely some sort of chemistry. And this other guy is really nice too I think his name's steve, something like that. He's really nice too. But definitely she kind of has her eye on the other guy. Date goes well, she leaves and, um, the next day the guy at the coffee shop not ste Steve, not blind date shows up and it turns out he's the owner of the gym next door.

Speaker 2:

It's like oh yeah, because of course he's like we should talk about parking spots and then they like get interrupted because you know that's the way it always goes Stuff has to happen. So anyway, he comes over, he says thank you for the basket.

Speaker 1:

At some point we should talk about the parking spots. Do you have a card or something?

Speaker 2:

And nothing actually happens. So we get. Duncan's parents are interesting people that they be.

Speaker 1:

I was excited to get to talk about this with you because you know respectfully what the fuck.

Speaker 2:

They're getting divorced for like the umpteenth time which they haven't actually followed through with it.

Speaker 1:

You're real close and never pull the trigger.

Speaker 2:

Exactly. And they want to have a divorce party, because that's what you do, and they want Duncan and his sister to write speeches.

Speaker 1:

I think it's the most weird need for attention I've ever heard of. There's no way, like I'm full on judging, like go ahead, crucify me in the comments, tell me how great yours was. No, you don't regret it.

Speaker 2:

A divorce party. Happy to hear about it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'm sure other people Are people having divorce parties. I've heard of them and shoots and stuff and I've seen the photo shoots yeah, yep, and then like to read about it. I've never seen like a full blown party. I know that this is a fictional book, but to read about it from the other family members perspectives it's like Cause Duncan's kind of over this whole thing. Especially cause it's almost happened so many times and it's like that's a really big emotional thing to get prepped for, yeah, and then for it to never happen.

Speaker 2:

Mm, hmm, happen, yeah, so that's kind of a whole thing throughout this entire thing of the parents are getting divorced. He's expected to do this speech. He doesn't really want to, he doesn't really care to go to the party, but he obviously has to because it's his parents.

Speaker 1:

He has a lot going on at home.

Speaker 2:

He's got just stress, Like he's just kind of over it. He just wants it to be done. He doesn't want to write a speech, he doesn't want to even go to this party, but his parents are kind of like pressuring them to do it and it'll be fun and yada, yada yada.

Speaker 2:

And you're like oh okay, if you say so. I just did my first. Yada, yada, yada. I'll try not to do anymore. You're doing great. So the next day, red is at the bakery and her aunt comes in and is trying to put in an order for irene and chris's engagement party.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, she's just like her little comment in there.

Speaker 2:

I don't remember what page it is, but her comment about your time will come, sweetie I just wanted to punch her through the book like just and I also felt like there was a little bit of like um oh, this is your bakery. Like, oh yeah very smoothy, yeah behavior. And so she mentions to her aunt that she is going to be bringing somebody and she's like oh, you are, oh, I couldn't possibly imagine that, or you're even coming like there's a lot of that in the book of like I can't believe you're actually going to come to your cousin's wedding, I guess it's like it's not my fault.

Speaker 2:

She's a backstabbing hoe yeah, I mean I probably want to go, but that's on me. Then we come into. One of probably my favorite tropes is the fake dating trope, because I think it's cute yeah, there's always.

Speaker 1:

It's always a recipe for, like, excellent drama feelings.

Speaker 2:

It's always a good, there's always like that line teetering of will they won't they, which tends to kind of be like one of my favorite things, um, so like, uh, new girl, nick and jess, like that my favorite thing, which they're kind of multiple things together. But I feel like they always teetered on the line of are they going to get together, are they not? And so I love those. Anyway, back in the boat New Girl reference. But so they meet, duncan and her meet, and she essentially is like I need to date to this wedding. I will give you what. What they end up agreeing on One parking spot and then they can alternate the other in a blueberry scone recipe.

Speaker 1:

Along with it.

Speaker 2:

If you'll pretend to do this with me, if you pretend to be my date. I just need to get through this. But she doesn't tell him that it's her ex, which I thought was interesting.

Speaker 1:

But I mean fair, that's probably a lot, yeah, but I'm like girl, like he didn't.

Speaker 2:

you didn't know that he liked you yet you didn't know that he even cared, so like it literally wouldn't have made you look any worse but I think like that's embarrassing, like for her, like she's trying to prove that it doesn't bother her throughout this whole thing, so she's probably embarrassed she leads with that, then it sounds like I need you to come to my ex's wedding and you're like I don't want to be used as a pawn yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2:

and then he, like, goes back to the boxing gym and his co-owner- Anthony. Anthony was like you signed up to be somebody's fake boyfriend.

Speaker 1:

I loved his character. It was just very like you know respectfully what the fuck.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and Anthony's in love with Duncan's sister. I don't remember what her name is now, so that's also kind of a subplot. How did I read?

Speaker 1:

that whole book and never pay attention to that. I feel so bad that I just really didn't like.

Speaker 2:

Anyway, there's like little moments where he like, if she's there, he like comes out and he's like oh, hey, like he obviously likes her.

Speaker 1:

That's why this needs to be a movie, Because if I saw it on screen I'd probably get it.

Speaker 2:

Look at that. Well, the second one is those two.

Speaker 1:

Spoiler alert there's more than one Like this is serious yeah.

Speaker 2:

The next one is Anthony and the Sisters. Oh yeah.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

Also very cute covers. But so Duncan's whole thing is he doesn't date. He's very driven, you know, he's got his boxing gym, he's very career-oriented and he doesn't date. So he's like you just randomly signed up to be somebody's fake boyfriend, really Like what are you doing? Yeah, and he's like it's just, you know, it's just what it is, da-da-da-da-da, excuse, excuse, excuse, backpedal backpedal he's like she's pretty, but there's nothing happening Okay.

Speaker 1:

Right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, happening. Okay, right, yeah got it. So they decide that they need to get to know each other. So they're gonna go bowling. Ew, a bowling alley smells like ketchup and you will never change my mind about that.

Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah, I agree, I I hate bowling I hate bowling hate the whole process putting my putting my feet gross oh no, putting your hands in a sweaty ball.

Speaker 2:

I just so, germy, if you're wearing nails, you're screwed. Yep, it smells like ketchup.

Speaker 1:

Everyone's staring at me while I do something I don't do very often and I'm a perfectionist.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm so bad and I'm clumsy. You can't put the bumpers up. You want to put me on a wax floor. It's embarrassing. Yeah, I'm done. Yeah, and I always am like yeah, that's the like first fucking thing everybody always wants to do.

Speaker 1:

Oh, let's go bowling.

Speaker 2:

I'm like.

Speaker 1:

I would literally rather go to the dentist.

Speaker 2:

Let's go play laser tag.

Speaker 1:

Yep All day, every day. That laser tag with me, because I'm great at it, yeah, but like prepare to like, connor, you better work.

Speaker 2:

That'll be our team bonding event yes, yes, but like when we go laser tag, there's kylie and there's laser tag kylie, and there are two very different people like I mean. So business she does and she does, and I win every time. I win every time. I have the best score.

Speaker 1:

You'd think she's done three tours in Afghanistan. The way she moves through there like a SWAT team okay, sniping people like giving orders, it's intense and you're just like yes, ma'am.

Speaker 2:

We went one time and we had this girl that we didn't know on our team.

Speaker 1:

She was so fun.

Speaker 2:

Oh, she was great. She's just like you got it. Whatever you say, I will be there. Oh okay, sorry, back in the boat, back in the boat, back in, back in. They go bowling which is horrible, which is the worst date that you could possibly imagine. But they're kind of like starting to realize they actually enjoy the other person, like they go tit for tat. Their banter is very good. They kind of like give each other a hard time. Oh, it's game on. Da da, da da.

Speaker 1:

Yada, yada, yada. It's alright, at least you can say your lines, right?

Speaker 2:

And then the bowling alley just like malfunctions and shuts down.

Speaker 1:

Comes with a piece of shit.

Speaker 2:

Because it's from 1920. Yep facts. Never maintained, and so then, they're like well, now what?

Speaker 1:

Like we already were on a weird fake date for a fake relationship and now we don't know what to do.

Speaker 2:

And then they go out to the car, and now we don't know what to do. And then they go out to the car. Well, they go out to the car and they're like, okay, bye. And then he's like screw it. Which is my favorite moment yeah, yes, duncan.

Speaker 2:

And then he like goes back up to her car and is like let's do something else. You know, like we came here to try and get to know each other so we can pretend to date, essentially. And they go to the fair, they get food at the fair, and then they go on a scary ride.

Speaker 1:

They have to hold hands because it's so scary.

Speaker 2:

Oh it's scary, I love that and then they continue to hold hands oh, and at that point you're in the book and you're like it's happening. And uh, then there's like, of course, a boxing game that she like tries to win this giant parrot and she doesn't do very well and so she only gets it off the third shell. She's like I thought I did pretty well and he's like I'll be right back.

Speaker 2:

And breaks the machine and breaks the machine, he gets the giant parrot for her, which I always think. Imagine like walking around with that giant thing. My arms get tired, I'm probably pretty done with this after that and like not being able to see around it. I'm like, yay, feet tall here, as tall as I am, yeah, anyway. And then no, they go on the right after that.

Speaker 1:

So then I was like yeah, you just put it in the seat next to you.

Speaker 2:

Right, okay, anyway.

Speaker 1:

So after that it starts raining and so they go to the restaurant that's like across the street from the fair. This was my favorite. I love this. So the snooty waiter and he's just like okay.

Speaker 2:

So they go and the waiter is just kind of the worst and they see that there's like a cake eating thing where if you eat the entire cake, you get $100.

Speaker 1:

In like 45 minutes or a half hour, something like that.

Speaker 2:

I'm like this was so real for me.

Speaker 1:

The way you and I would sign up, so fucking fast. Bet I'm going to demolish this. Even if I wasn't with you, you'd be like are you busy right now, Literally.

Speaker 2:

No, why.

Speaker 1:

I need you to meet me at this restaurant and eat a cake.

Speaker 2:

Why not? All right, Just try it. And I love that, like they don't really know each other and then they're like, yeah, why not Trying to eat a whole cake, I mean. I mean, I will if you will, and I really. So this is my favorite part. That was so funny.

Speaker 1:

I was really like that. I was laughing a lot when I was reading this part.

Speaker 2:

Yes, and then like they get it and she's like cutting herself a slice and he just like, immediately is like digging into it. And he's like we don't have to do that, Like we don't need to be polite, we're just trying to get this done.

Speaker 1:

We're raising winners here.

Speaker 2:

Exactly, and she's like okay, but if I go into like a sugar coma, you got to roll me out of here essentially. And he's like you got it and they win. They do end up eating it. They get the $100.

Speaker 1:

Hell yeah.

Speaker 2:

They get like their picture taken, I'm pretty sure. Yep, really cute, silly, silly thing.

Speaker 1:

So I loved it I loved it.

Speaker 2:

yep, because that's so real. So during this she mentions that she's never seen Rocky before and he's like well, that is just a mortal sin, you have to watch Rocky.

Speaker 1:

One does not simply not watch Rocky.

Speaker 2:

Because he's a boxing guy. Yep, I imagine.

Speaker 1:

It's a brain to brain. Yay, it'd be like a pilot being shocked you hadn't seen Top Gun.

Speaker 2:

I've never seen Top Gun. What we want to go there? No, I shouldn't. I have no room. I have no room to talk. He's never seen any movie that you can possibly think of you name it, I haven't seen it yeah, you're like, oh, stepbrothers, she's like never watched it actually I have now.

Speaker 1:

I'm like wait, what did?

Speaker 2:

you just watch the other day white chicks for the first time, like anything, and we're really big on like little sayings and stuff, so you'll like think that it's just a great one liner. And she just looks at you like it's like oh, you didn't get that, oh, okay cool. Okay, cool, alrighty then. So I want to hear about Top Gun. Sorry, fair Anyway.

Speaker 1:

She's going to watch it on her phone on the way home today.

Speaker 2:

I promise you I won't. I probably don't have any interest in it. If I'm watching it, it's going to be the new one with Glenn Powell.

Speaker 1:

And that's the only reason I'm going to watch it.

Speaker 2:

Anyway. So he's like we have to watch Rocky. They go, they leave, whatever they go. They leave whatever Next day movie day. I don't think it's the next day, I think it's a little bit afterwards.

Speaker 1:

A date at her place? Yeah, but she kind of is being difficult about the schedule because she's like, oh well, we have to do it before this time because I'm watching my niece and nephew.

Speaker 2:

Which is valid. I thought that was fair. But I also think she's putting a time frame on it for a reason, because she's kind of starting to like him, but it's like the forbidden fruit. They're not really supposed to be liking each other. You know, it's just for show or whatever. So she's like if I do it like midday, then he has to leave by this time because my niece and nephew are gonna be there. So he shows up and she's like making donuts for her niece and nephew and he helps her with it, and then they start the movie. And she's like making donuts for her niece and nephew and he helps her with it, and then they start the movie and she falls asleep, which again yep, I too fell asleep when I watched that movie so relatable.

Speaker 2:

Yep bye. I can't tell you how many times I've fallen asleep during the movie. He just like lets her sleep and watches her, not in like an ed Cullen type of way, but like just kind of you know, oh, she's so cute.

Speaker 1:

He's just sitting there. This is the skin of a killer, fella.

Speaker 2:

Okay, moving forward. She wakes up From her little beauty rest Like he's just sat and watched her for three hours take, and they work on the donuts and then they kiss. And then her brother shows up, yep, well, they kiss. And then they're like no, no, no, really, we shouldn't, yep, we can't. Well, they don't even kiss, like her shirt's off, like things are happening. And then her brother shows up and she's like oh, great heavens. So he meets her brother and he's like oh, hi, duncan, she's like it's new.

Speaker 2:

I don't want to talk about it, but they're like we shouldn't do this, Of course.

Speaker 1:

We can't do it, wouldn't want to enjoy ourselves.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we don't want to cross that line, even though it's already been crossed. But it's like, okay, nothing, we're great. And then she goes to a catering event and she ends up seeing Steve who was the blind date guy.

Speaker 1:

Ah, yes.

Speaker 2:

And she thought he had ghosted her because she never heard from him. And he's like I thought you ghosted me because I tried to text you and you never replied or whatever. She's like you must have put my number in wrong or something, because I never got anything. He's like oh well, let me get it. Yada, yada, yada. And uh, sorry, I'm trying You're doing really good though.

Speaker 2:

He's like, let me get it. And she's like well, I'm kind of seeing somebody Like about that. Yeah, but she did like this other guy. She just thought that he ghosted her.

Speaker 1:

But now she likes Duncan and like the ship has just sailed, like moving on and this guy's acting like they had like Miss Connections 101. Like this, had like missed connections 101, like this, could this?

Speaker 2:

could be the one, the love of my life. Dude, it was just a chick at a coffee shop, like they got along, don't discredit him too much. And she's like I'm seeing somebody and he's like okay, well, let me get your number, like, in case anything changes, let me know. She's like oh, okay, so then the next day after work her employees want to go and take a class at the boxing gym. I was like team building Okay, I would rather die. I would rather die.

Speaker 1:

Team building in a workout class.

Speaker 2:

No, no, let's do an escape room meal at each other. Leave me alone to be in my misery.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't want to work out with other people. No, no. No, no, no People, oh, let's go for a jog together.

Speaker 2:

so you can hear me let's go for a jog together.

Speaker 1:

Like.

Speaker 2:

I'd rather die. Personally, I would rather die. That's why I have jogged with coworkers.

Speaker 1:

Sounds awful, it was.

Speaker 2:

Rhonda, she's my friend. Oh well, the company is important. Yeah, exactly. Anywho, it was ronald she's my friend. Oh well, she's a co-worker the company is important.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly anywho.

Speaker 2:

So they go, and then the main desk is like oh sorry, you can't go because the class is space yeah, and then of course, duncan comes and he is walking out and he stops in his tracks because she's just, he's so enamored by her beauty. She's got her workout clothes on. So I mean Looking like a snack, Looking like a snack, and he's like, oh, no, no, no, it's fine, Like she can turn.

Speaker 1:

Let her in. Let her in.

Speaker 2:

Right, cool, which also, at the same time, they'll like read it. I'm like, yeah, he's getting to take care and he like wraps her hands and like makes sure she's all ready. They're like walking down the hallway. Hey, plot twist, she never ends up doing the class because he like pulls her into his office Somebody's office, I didn't even know if it was his.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, they have a little make out sesh, and then he's essentially like I'm done pretending that I don't want you, or something like that. Yeah, like done pretending this, I don't want you, or something like that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, like done, pretending this isn't real or something.

Speaker 2:

He says something like that Not real because he definitely doesn't want to date her.

Speaker 1:

But he doesn't really want us to get something else from her. True.

Speaker 2:

So I'm done pretending that this isn't that. I don't remember exactly what he says Something vulgar.

Speaker 1:

Read the book and you'll find out.

Speaker 2:

Pretty sure it's pretty vulgar. Read the book and you'll find out. Pretty sure it's pretty vulgar, because he's got a mouth on him, sir. He's like duncan day, duncan night, those are two different people, for sure. And she's like, oh, okay, like I look forward to it. Yeah, it's like, oh yes. And then we have the engagement party, which they drive separately to, which I didn't really love.

Speaker 1:

You and I drive everywhere together whenever possible. Yeah, I hate going separately. I don't either. I don't like it either. It's just weird.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, if we have to meet there, fine, but I don't really like it Because you get the car time together.

Speaker 1:

Yep.

Speaker 2:

Which I think is nice. Like before you get there, you don't kind of like oh, how was your day Da you listen to music? I don't know. I like card time anyway, engagement party and there's a videographer who's like asking her to like.

Speaker 1:

Oh, this part this.

Speaker 2:

Say something nice to the bride and groom and she's like, yeah, congratulations like totally being as just okay quick.

Speaker 1:

He's like not personal enough yeah yeah, just a little bit more. She's like uh, again, she's so much nicer than I would have been yeah.

Speaker 2:

Well, everyone at the party is like oh, you're here, you know can't believe you showed up.

Speaker 1:

I don't believe you showed up.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I thought I was like seeing somebody else for a second or whatever all this stuff also. We'll come back to the video thing. Also I thought it was interesting. Some of chris's relatives like recognize her, like oh, I've seen you, and she's like, oh, I'm irene's cousin, and she's like, oh, must be the family resemblance or something like that, what the hell? Which I thought was a little bit interesting.

Speaker 2:

Like I don't know how long they dated for, but I feel like it was a while I feel like you would know who she is right, because most people do yep there and they're very shocked that she's even there anyway I felt like they were just being assholes I agree.

Speaker 2:

And so the videographer like keeps like egging her on like a little bit more, a little bit more. And then you hear duncan and he's like I think that's enough. And I'm like, yes, there he is, there's our knight in shiny armor, and um, so he kind of becomes like her shield, in a way. During this party he did a really great job. This is where I was, like I they have to be together.

Speaker 2:

I love him. So of course the happy couple comes in, ken and barbie the happy, and then when they go sit down to eat, of course they're sitting right across from them. Why wouldn't they? Can you imagine? No, thank you, you, david I mean your ex even being at your wedding anyway. Right, I guess that would be, from chris's point of view, having to go to your ex's buddy hi, I mean that would not be good, I wouldn't be kind.

Speaker 1:

So I mean I would have fun. Boy, would I have fun. I would be drinking, yep, you and me. As someone who doesn't drink, I would be drinking.

Speaker 2:

But so they sit right across from them and they're like talking and it's fine. And Chris is saying like a lot of like digs at Duncan, specifically Of course, and Duncan's just like, Because he's a miserable sniveling little Anyway. Duncan's like playing the part. He's like, yeah, we've been together for a few months. Huh, babe, yeah, just totally into it.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I loved him the way. Justin totally would have done something like this.

Speaker 2:

It was just so good. And he's just, they're just like all loved up and stuff. But then he also is like being really funny or like saying stuff like he's like oh yeah, she came in for a full workout the other day and stuff, and she like starts laughing and starts to relax a little bit which is to enjoy it a little bit as much as you can.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, considering well more, just like she's having a good time with Duncan, regardless on what's happening around her. And then he goes to the bathroom and he hears, like in the line to the bathroom, them gossiping about Retta being there. And oh, I can't imagine showing up at my ex's wedding Like all right bitches. Which then he clocks oh okay, chris is Retta's ex, like alright bitches. Which then he clocks oh okay, chris has read a sex.

Speaker 1:

Oh, wait a second.

Speaker 2:

And he never says anything to her about it.

Speaker 1:

I found that kind of messed up.

Speaker 2:

Really I liked it. If she wanted him to know, she would have told him.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and like what did I want To him? To act like a tool about it, Like make her feel bad. He didn't care.

Speaker 2:

So yeah, like make her feel bad. So yeah, you're right. So I like that. He just like was like, oh, okay, and like he didn't really change his behavior towards her. But I think he kind of more understood why she needed a date, like why she's being a little bit awkward around them, because if it's your cousin, what cousin's wedding? Typically you would be like, oh so just excited and relaxed and exactly, which is not how she's feeling at all.

Speaker 2:

They go back to his house and they sleep together, yep, which I was like it's kind of good, though, because I was like if he would have found out after that it happened, I feel like that would have he would have felt a certain way about it. Yeah, so I do like how kind of all that came about.

Speaker 1:

It all happened for the right reasons, after all.

Speaker 2:

And so the next morning he's like oh, I got to drop off these tools at my dad's house and his mom is at his dad's house.

Speaker 1:

And he's like so you guys are back together.

Speaker 2:

Are you kidding me? No, no, no. And he just like leaves. Then he's like no, and he just like leaves. Then he's like really off, and I didn't really like this. So he's like off and he clearly is feeling a certain way and he's like going to talk to her about it and she's like, oh, I'm about to get a ticket, like we'll talk later, and she takes off and you could have been like walk with me.

Speaker 1:

I'm listening. Yeah, Make time for someone.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, because he was like going to open up and then didn't, because, well, he was literally in the process of it. He was trying, yeah, but then we get to wedding time and they're staying with Miss Eddie, her grandma.

Speaker 1:

Oh, Miss Eddie.

Speaker 2:

Who is a little bit of a hard ass.

Speaker 1:

You know, she reminded me a lot of Lady Danbury from.

Speaker 2:

Bridgerton oh fair Like fair. I pictured her Just more savage Okay. I didn't technically fan cast her, so I'm going to say it now.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

I pictured her as, like the old lady from Deadpool, his roommate. Yes, oh, that's perfect, the blonde one. That's how I pictured her, even though I don't think that's what she actually looks like oh my God, yeah, good job that's kind of how I pictured her, anyway, so they're staying at her house, duncan just took this old lady.

Speaker 1:

Shit like just over and over man, what a saint.

Speaker 2:

Yes, because she's like make sure you take your shoes off. You have to call her Miss Eddie. It's very manners, she's very much you have to do manners. He is like oh, nice to meet you. She's like meh.

Speaker 1:

Whatever?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, she doesn't really care, and they go and watch the sunrise together. She wakes him up really early and he's like okay.

Speaker 1:

That was the spiciest sunrise I've ever heard of.

Speaker 2:

Agreed, which I'm like. You kind of missed the sunrise if we're going to be honest yeah like okay.

Speaker 1:

Me, the photographer nerd, would have been like hang on, like I'm only going to get this shot once, like leave me alone.

Speaker 2:

Well, they're not allowed to stay in the same room.

Speaker 1:

True.

Speaker 2:

He's not allowed upstairs.

Speaker 1:

I forgot about that. Yeah, because there's, the stairs creak and she'll hear. And she's a very proper old woman, she's very proper.

Speaker 2:

So when they get back, she's like, oh, help me out in the garden, I'm going to put you to work, or whatever. Yep, and she has like arthritis or something in her hands, carpal tunnel, carpal tunnel. And he's like, oh, I have some exercises I can help you with. And she's like, hmm, all right. And then she, reda, brings him out a drink or whatever. Oh, oh, while they're watching Rocky, she tells him that she won winner bakes. All yep, but somebody in the cast was arrested for fraud and so the season never aired. But she did win it. And it's like this little thing that she doesn't really mention to anybody. But so fast forward here. The grandma says to her you told him that you won Winter Bank Sale. And she's like, yeah, it came up, you know whatever. And she's like, hmm, interesting.

Speaker 1:

Grandma knew.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, she's like okay.

Speaker 1:

Like you don't tell anybody about that and you just happened to mention it to him.

Speaker 2:

huh it just came up, so grandma starts softening a little bit here. The next day is wedding day and she and Duncan is helping her exercise. And grandma's like she sees him being all sweet and she's like oh, no yeah, and grandma's like I get why you love him, or like he's pretty great. She does say I get why you love him, and she's like I don't.

Speaker 1:

I don't know what you're talking about.

Speaker 2:

We don't do that, what do you?

Speaker 1:

mean Feelings.

Speaker 2:

And at the wedding they're sitting there. Her mom is like hey, can you take?

Speaker 1:

these earrings back to irene and she's like, okay, such a, this whole family just really wants to sucker. Punch her like, oh, here you want to take these earrings to the person that fucking betrayed you who's marrying your ex-boyfriend?

Speaker 2:

no, no, I don't. But so she goes back. She can't find her Irene's outside and she's like panicking.

Speaker 1:

Sorry, I'm not bored, it's just I couldn't hold it.

Speaker 2:

She hates me. So she's outside and she's like panicking and she's like I don't think I can do this. I don't think this is the life that I want and chris is like frat brother, like to the extreme chris and she's like I don't know if I want to be that like, I want to travel, I don't know.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to just be chris's wife.

Speaker 2:

I don't want to be just chris's wife, right? It's like okay, like you don't have to, let's go tell everybody it. It's okay, I'll go with you. She's being really nice.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, this was a very Meredith Grey Christina Yang moment. There's a scene like this and I was like, oh, she's going to have to do the Meredith Grey walk. Anyone that's a Grey's fan knows what I'm talking about. It's so funny Anyway.

Speaker 2:

But Irene says no, I'm not See ya and runs away. So she's like panicking in this back alley.

Speaker 1:

Put Retta in a horrible situation. That looks so bad. It looks so bad. All I put was oh my God, the bride ran away. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

So Duncan comes outside, she's like panicking, he's like what happened? She's like she left. We were talking, it was really good Things were fine she was panicking and she just took off. Then they weren't. That whole thing happens. They don't end up getting married and they go back to Miss Eddie's house and then Duncan panics.

Speaker 1:

It's weird, but I mean I get it. This is a weird situation. The wedding's done, now what?

Speaker 2:

Now what, now what? And he's like I don't really want to go, so I guess I have to go. Like he just starts packing up and they were like, oh, let's order pizza, let's do this, you know, hang out. And then she comes downstairs and he's just like packed, see ya, I got to go. If I leave now, I can probably sleep in a real bed tonight. And she's like, oh okay, and she's just so sad.

Speaker 1:

She's very sad the way you and me would be like, okay, totally, that's fine. Yeah, I mean, I get it Crying to each other on Snapchat.

Speaker 2:

He fucking left. Yeah, I would be heartbroken and which the whole thing was just kind of weird to me and like I get it, he's like a player he doesn't commit, ew, david. So he leaves and then the grandma is like I think it's more of a stew night and she's like crying and she's consoling her and I was like auntie.

Speaker 1:

We love a good grandma.

Speaker 2:

Yes, and so then the next thing is the divorce party which Miss Eddie, no Reddit had told him. Maybe you should like frustration journal and just like write what you want to write and say that Like just be honest, yeah, type thing, which he kind of does. Yeah, it's more of like I thought you know, you know, like looking at your guys's marriage made me realize like I don't want anything like it, kind of like way to roast your parents like yeah, in like a sweet way, I guess, of like you guys aren't right for each other and like that's okay yeah type of thing.

Speaker 2:

But in the midst of this speech he realizes that he does want to be with retta, because she's all the things that he thinks that a marriage should be. And go get your girl. And then his sister is like so can I expect a family and friends discount at the bakery now?

Speaker 1:

and he's like yeah, I love that which I was like cocky cocky you don't know if she's gonna take it pretty highly. You're pretty highly yourself.

Speaker 2:

So then he decides he's going to get her back, not that night, of course, but at some point. Yep, and so we get to a night where Red is closing up shop, there's a knock at the door and it's Chris.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and he's like I yeah.

Speaker 2:

And he's like I was so excited too.

Speaker 1:

I was like oh, oh, I thought you meant that it was Chris. I was like no, I was like reading this, like, yeah, it's going to be Duncan and it'll be raining and he'll be like I love you and I can't not. No, it's old friend boy Chris, it was sniveling, fucking Chris. I can just imagine his ugly crying face while he.

Speaker 2:

He's crying to Her. Is this what it felt like when we broke up Shut up. Oh, I hated it. I'm like what are you living here? For? Why are you here, I don't get out? And she kind of was like okay, yeah, sorry, sucks, huh. Yeah, yeah, it was pretty hard on me, especially when you started dating my cousin A month later, anyway. So Duncan sees him leave and he's kind of like oh crap, great, like what if now they're getting back together?

Speaker 1:

He immediately like he thought and felt more deeply than I expected him to. So then the whole time he's spiraling. I'm like, bro, stop overthinking. And I'm like this is how people feel about me. Like, stop overthinking.

Speaker 2:

What so? Anyway, susie doesn't overthink anything. Spiraling in my car, oh, the spiral has begun. Um. So he's like oh my gosh, she's back with him. I need to go over there. Yep, okay already. And so he knocks and he's like she answers. And he's like how are you? She's like she answers and he's like how are you? She's like better now.

Speaker 1:

And he's like, oh great, yeah, great, now for sure, she really is back with him.

Speaker 2:

And then she gets a call and it's her friend, Kim her best friend and she's having a baby and she's like I gotta go, when are my keys? I gotta go.

Speaker 1:

I gotta go right now. And then because, of course, yep, and he's like oh, thank you. She's like okay, and it's just a, I loved it. They did a good job. But you could picture this scene really well in your head. And then the way he like gets the most of the hospital safely, and kim being funny the whole time into the hospital.

Speaker 2:

He's like you're okay, I gotcha, and she's like well all right, is this a thing now like she's kind of like she was so funny about it.

Speaker 1:

At the same time, I read as you like shut up.

Speaker 2:

Now it's not really the time here we were going to have a conversation and I stopped it for this, but so, anyway, he takes him and she's like, ok, bye. And she goes, has the baby, she comes back, he's still there. She's like, oh, it's a boy. And they make up and he's like I want to try this with you, and I don't do relationships because he of course doesn't do relationships, but he'll try for you. Yeah, and it's all cute.

Speaker 1:

And she's like oh well, you're going to have to, like, deal with this and deal with that, because he's never really had a girlfriend, that's true.

Speaker 2:

So I'm gonna steal your sweaters and all that kind of stuff I love at the ending. It was just so cute. I was like, yay, it was very cute it was wrapped up in a nice little bow, how I like it, just like you talked about, with a nice, perfect ending, yes, so I think this would be a great rom-com I think it would do well, yes honestly, I think it would do really well. Yes.

Speaker 2:

Honestly I think it would do really well. I enjoyed it. The covers are darling. I love the characters. I love how relatable it is.

Speaker 1:

Very.

Speaker 2:

I thought it was excellent.

Speaker 1:

Me too.

Speaker 2:

Maybe I'm rethinking, I don't know. I don't know, I don't know what the rating is. Okay, I liked it. The more I think of stuff and it's like oh be so, for real, you know what I mean, yep, and it didn't really feel like that, didn't? Have a lot of it Like there weren't any stuff that's like, oh, that would never happen.

Speaker 1:

It was a very realistic book, very realistic, very realistically yeah.

Speaker 2:

So I enjoyed it. It is time.

Speaker 1:

Would you like to explain to us what fan cast is? Fan cast is if we were to make whatever book. We're reading a movie.

Speaker 2:

Which I think this should be picked up for a movie.

Speaker 1:

Yes, who would we choose from our favorite actors, or just celebrities that we enjoy? Who would we cast?

Speaker 2:

and it's also like who you pictured.

Speaker 1:

Yes, while you were reading it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, uh, you go for. I only casted the main two, but you can, you know, whatever your heart desires here. Did you cast everybody? Uh, like six, okay, we're just switching roles this time. Yeah, exactly, but I didn't do every single and I should have.

Speaker 1:

I just have names. Okay, I'll google. I'm sorry. Ready, okay, uh, for reda carrie washington, from uh, most famous from scandal yeah, I see her little clips yes, I love her. Uh, duncan jesse williams from Grey's Anatomy Okay, he's dreaming, anthony Michael B Jordan, because he's like kind of sassy. Yep Uh Kim Kelly McCreary.

Speaker 2:

I don't know who that is Kelly.

Speaker 1:

McCreary, and then Irene. I had, uh, susan Watson. Uh, she's the actress from this Is Us, she plays Beth. So that was my fan cast. Yeah, oh yeah. And then Miss Eddie was Lady Danbury fair so mine are younger, for sure okay.

Speaker 2:

Reda for me was Alicia Bow, which she's from 13 reasons why throw some glasses on her. Yes, perfect, yeah. Um, for duncan, I kind of have two. So immediately in my head was michael b jordan, but then the more I was thinking about it a duncan, it has darker skin than mich B Jordan. So I felt like that. I was like, okay, maybe not. So you know my favorite podcast Shits and Gigs. I send you clips of it all the time, okay, yes, now I follow the two guys.

Speaker 1:

Yep, yep, they're so funny.

Speaker 2:

I bought merch. That was like one of the first merch items I've ever bought in my life. Dang, I watch them every single morning Consistently. I love their reaction, anyway. So I ended up actually casting Duncan as Fuhad from Shits and Gigs. Okay, and I'll show you I could see it honestly. Honestly, I could see it, yeah, because he's so sweet. Well, I don't actually know him, so maybe not, but he seems very authentic.

Speaker 1:

The persona he puts on is very sweet.

Speaker 2:

So that was my final fan cast, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked that. So I was like okay, I feel confident with that one. So that was all I casted. And the lady from Deadpool, I guess. Yes, you did, but like unofficially fan casted her.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, fan casted her. Yeah, yeah, fair, um, any final thoughts. I don't know, just this was a really short and sweet and like fun book, like if that, if you need a good palate cleanser book you, and like just something fun to read, this is it cutesy great.

Speaker 2:

No like real big traumatic drama at all which was kind of nice. It was a nice change we tend to like those honestly yeah, we are a glutton for punishment, yeah make us cry.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we do need a cry book, though, because I want to do one yeah well, I always want to do one, because that's how I like to read, but so if you guys have any books that made you sob, just let us know. Yep, because we need one. Yes, we're not going to have the guys do that one, though, because they'll be like what do you mean?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Anyway, final thoughts. I liked it. I'm going to read the next one, yeah.

Speaker 1:

I want to now too.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I thought it was great. I'm surprised, honestly, because I don't think she's a very big author, which I was kind of surprised by. I felt like this was great, like more people should definitely read this than have.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, agreed.

Speaker 2:

So I feel like she should be bigger than she is, in my opinion. Anywho, well, that's going to be it from us, I think. Thanks, guys. Like Subscribe, follow I don't know. Like Subscribe Follow I don't know, yeah, bye.

Speaker 1:

Bye. Written and performed by Kylie and Susie.

Speaker 2:

Produced and edited by Connor Luther and filmed at the SDF Collective. Because I've seen the Creed movies. If you haven't watched them, don't watch all of them right before you watch an actual boxing match, because it's disappointing. You're like what the heck is this? We did that. Justin made me watch all of them. Oh, my god because before any new movie comes out, for anything. Watch them all you have to watch every single one before it. Do you know how many times I've watched, fast and furious, the way I?

Speaker 1:

know I don want. I've seen those all too many times. Once was too many times. Every time, okay, Okay, I'm going to say something.

Speaker 2:

With what's his name, main guy Vin Diesel.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

All of his lines, every single thing he says is just one-liners. Yep, every time they have no actual meaning, doesn't do anything to the plot, yeah, but he's just like everything. Family's family, yep, okay, like, okay.

Speaker 1:

I'm so glad you agree but uh, yeah anyway. So for me my thing my thing about Fast and Furious. No car has 13 gears. You cannot up and down shift that many times. There is only five to six ever.

Speaker 2:

And one of them is reverse. You can't do like 99% of the things in Fast and Furious.

Speaker 1:

True, I know, but if you're going to try to be a car movie, could you?

Speaker 2:

at least Anyway, yes. Fast and Furious is made just to watch and go wow and that's it. There's no actual plot, there's no actual dialogue.

Speaker 1:

It's just like Megan Fox and explosions. And who else can you try to pull in?

Speaker 2:

here. I don't even know she's from Transformers.

Speaker 1:

I was like that's not.

Speaker 2:

No.
