When Girls Talk Books

Ep.17 PT. 2 Fancast The Troop By Nick Cutter

When Girls Talk Books Season 2 Episode 5

We dive into our fan casting choices for Nick Cutter's skin-crawling horror novel, imagining which actors would bring these disturbing characters to life on screen. The book's phenomenal writing made our skin crawl in the best possible way, earning a strong 4.5/5 rating despite—or perhaps because of—how deeply uncomfortable it made us feel.

• Fan casting pairs book characters with actors who could play them in a hypothetical film adaptation
• David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Paul Bettany suggested for Scoutmaster Tim
• Evan Peters unanimously chosen as the perfect actor to play creepy Shelly
• Actors from "Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse" inspired many of our casting choices
• Brief side discussion about Shia LaBeouf and the film "Peanut Butter Falcon"
• Nick Cutter's descriptive writing made the horror feel visceral and real
• Initial confusion about "the worm thing" gave way to complete immersion
• The book gets under your skin and stays with you after reading

Speaker 2:

fan cast time fan cast, fan cast. What is fan cast, fan cast is if we were going to make this book into a movie or a show, who would we choose to play the characters? And it's my favorite part mine's reading the book usually yeah, once I get done, I'm like I did it. I did another book in like less than a month, like we did it, we did it.

Speaker 1:

yeah, have you ever seen the movie scout's guide to the zombie apocalypse? Nope, and it is one of my favorite movies. So my cast is loosely based around that movie, because that's all I could think of. It's hilarious, it's so funny, it's so funny. I love that movie. The first time I ever watched it I was like I don't know where this. You know it's stupid humor, but you need it in your life. So just kind of keep in mind that my cast is loosely based on there. Okay, we'll start with Scoutmaster Tim.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I did David Harbour from Stranger Things. I don't know who that is.

Speaker 1:

Oh, oh, that's a pretty good one. That's way better than mine. Oh yeah, go on. Who's your shitty choice? Wow, paul Bettany.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, because I feel like he has to be a little bit nerdy and he was kind of lanky like the way they described him in the book.

Speaker 1:

He's a doctor, but he does it's on the side, so he's got like you know. Okay. Anyway, I don't hate that, that's not a shitty choice. Thanks him in the book. He's a doctor, but he does it's on the side, so he's got like you know, okay, anyway I don't hate that.

Speaker 2:

That's not a shitty choice. Thanks, because only my opinion matters okay, okay.

Speaker 1:

Who'd you cast for kent?

Speaker 2:

um horrible choice, yeah, yeah I don't have anyone for kent, but my brain had decided he was a kind of like big, like awkward stocky redhead kid, don't know why. Just that's what I had.

Speaker 1:

So for Kent I did Lucas Gage and he's just jockey Jockey dude. Yeah, not bad. Yeah, not a whole lot of thought went into that one. I get that Did you do, shelly?

Speaker 2:

Oh, yes, I did, Shelly. Who did you do Evan Peters? He's like who else could?

Speaker 1:

just nail a creep, I'll scratch mine. Evan Peters, scratch from that Scratch. Yeah, I will say what mine was, but that's definitely better. Okay, mine was Asa Butterfield. I don't know why.

Speaker 2:

I feel like he could do a good job, Especially with that picture. Yeah, he could do it. I thought you were going to say the guy that plays Malfoy, and I'm like that'd be a good one too.

Speaker 1:

No, I tried to stay on like the younger side for actors, or like I thought of them in like their younger years. Okay, so that was my. I don't know. I feel like he's such a good actor. Also, I do really like him where I feel like he could get really creepy. I don't know why.

Speaker 2:

And the last character I had was mutant. Mutant, uh, I had. I can't, I cannot pronounce this name properly. Another stranger things gatton madarazo. Oh, okay, I know who he is.

Speaker 1:

Okay, yes, that kid um, mine is joey morgan. He's from scout sky and zombie apocalypse. Okay, max and ephraim are, uh, the two main guys in Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. So Ty Sheridan is going to be Max, okay, he's a little bit more like just kind of good boy type vibes, and then he has his friend who's a little bit more rougher and like goofy and stuff, which I feel like. That's Ephraim, okay, and that's Logan Miller.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so those were mine. Ephraim was whatever actor you said. You didn't do it. I was thinking I'm like if I had to panic twice it would be like a young schmidt whoever and I know that doesn't necessarily, but like I feel like a young schmidt would play good with that fair. And then, uh, my max was Shia LaBeouf. Yeah, throwing out a left field random one, yeah, sure, throwing it on Some of his younger years, just do it.

Speaker 1:

Have you watched the movie Peanut Butter Falcon? I tried, it's so good. What do you mean? You tried, I just got so bored you didn't like it. It's so good, I'll try it again.

Speaker 2:

That movie's so good. You should. I've heard that it's like so good. Yeah, a lot of people have talked about it.

Speaker 1:

It's definitely like different, but it's really good.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

And there who was it? I think it was Breezy was telling us that she watched this interview where they talk about, like during that time, shia LaBeouf was kind of like losing it and he would like not show up to set and things like that. And the guy who is in the movie, the one who has Down syndrome, was kind of like told him off on like you can do whatever you want to do. Don't ruin this for us, though. Like this is my chance, this is for me and I for us, though like this is my chance, this is for me and I'm doing this for myself and you don't get to ruin that for me. And so it was like this big wake up moment for him of like you're not the only person suffering yeah, well, like somebody to actually like say it to him and not like in a.

Speaker 1:

It was in a different way and so they actually kind of became pretty close after that, and so you see it develop in the movie too, and that was just a side note. That's really cool. If you haven't watched peanut butter falcon, I would highly recommend it.

Speaker 2:

Final thoughts respectfully, what in the ever-living hell, but really good, like I would read another one of nick's books. I phenomenally written. Yeah, I've never had such an easy time like reading a physical book. I mean not that it was easy to read what I was reading, but yeah, just like it was great, I really liked it yeah, um, if you're on our Instagram or our TikTok, the thing I posted the other day was perfect.

Speaker 1:

What the fuck man like? That's literally how I felt during this entire thing.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, was just like yeah, like my skin crawled.

Speaker 1:

And this book, like it makes you think about it, it gets in you yeah and I think like, uh, to me that's a good author, yes, to like, feel that of, like, ooh, like it was so well done, the description of everything. You could really see it, you could feel it Like it was really well done. In the beginning I would say I was a little confused on this whole worm thing, but that's because I didn't know where we were going with it. Yep, and then after that, 10 out of 10. Yep, it was so good, it was really good. It's a strong four and a half. For me. It's a strong four and a half. I don't know why it's not a five, but it's not so I feel like, yeah, to give a five, it's a lot.

Speaker 1:

Susie wants someone to fall in love yeah yeah, lindsay's kidding. Alright, that'll be it from us. Yeah, like.

Speaker 2:
